A knitting project

Still haven't gotten to writing up the pants sewing post, but I did finish a very small knitting project, so you get to hear about that instead.

I've been knitting before bed as a nice screen-free wind-down activity. I tried adding reading to my bedtime routine, but my "just one more page" tendencies made that a bad idea. "Just one more row" is not nearly as tempting.

I bought this yarn years ago with the thought that it might make a nice slightly-exfoliating washcloth, so when I went looking at what I had for abandoned planned projects this seemed like a good option.

An unevenly-knitted orange, yellow, and white washcloth. Beside it is a partial ball of the ribbon yarn it's made of. Above the yarn is the back of the yarn label, which reads "40% polyester, 39% acrylic, 21% polyamide."

Unfortunately, I forgot how much of a nuisance novelty yarn can be to work with, so this was a little frustrating to knit. Didn't help that I'm pretty out of practice.

It's also not that great a washcloth. The texture feels about right, but it doesn't lather very nicely. Plus it's thick enough to be a nuisance to rinse, and stretchy/loose enough to stretch out of shape a lot when wet. On the other hand, I haven't yet washed it, so maybe the changes from ignoring the washing instructions will help. (It's a washcloth, I'm not going to lay it flat to dry.)

None of this is really the yarn's fault. The properties that make it a bit frustrating to knit are quite obvious if you're looking for them, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't actually marketed for washcloths. And it's pretty.

A close up of part of a ball of ribbon yarn and some fabric knitted from it. The ribbon yarn is made of three white lengthwise threads connected by many horizontal threads. Sections of matte white horizontal threads alternate with sections of glossy threads in multiple shades of orange and yellow. The spaces between the horizontal threads look very easy to accidentally stick the point of a knitting needle into.

But I don't know what I'll do with the other half of the ball, and I can't say I'm particularly broken up about the yarn having been discontinued.

I do have a next project lined up for bedtime knitting, this time using a much less exciting yarn. 😌
